Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary Facts

The Marine Sanctuary was established in 1992 for the purpose of resource protection, research, education, and public use of this national treasure. It is part of a system of 13 National Marine Sanctuaries administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Size: 6,094 square statute miles or 4,024 square nautical miles.

Seabirds: 94 species
Fish: 345 species
Turtles: 4 species
Invertebrates: 31 phyla
Marine algae: 450-plus species
Historical Sites: 1,276 reported shipwrecks and 718 prehistoric sites.
